Empowering youth to take action on climate justice and health
Hi, whats up? How are you? This is us trying to calm ourselves down before diving into everything lol. Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌎 🥳
Okay let’s dive in!
What has Climate Operation been up to?
Climate Cafe’s and Workshops
We hosted a Climate Cafe in December in collaboration with Abayuuti Climate Action Network and Green Futures Initiative with the aim of creating safe spaces for young people to have climate justice conversations and we have to say we really had fun.
We made a cute little after-movie here so feel free to watch it!
Still running on the high of the previous Cafe, we went ahead and had another cafe on 28th February 2023 in collaboration with the above collaborators in addition with the Uganda Council on Foreign Relations and the theme of this event was Uniting Youth for Climate Action. Throughout the session we used the films and comics made through the Envisioning Environmental Equity Project to not only engage young people in climate and health dialogue but to also amplify the work that other young people and communities in MAPA areas are doing to improve the negative health impacts of climate change in their communities.
Watch the after-movie of the event or peep our Instagram slider of pictures from the event.
11th Hour Films and Comics
Watched the films and read the comics, now what?
We have come up with short infographic with tips on how you can further engage your audience in climate, health and justice discourse. Check it out here!
Climate Jobs/Internships/Volunteer Opportunities
For those interested in working in climate 🥳 we highly recommend starting from Work on Climate’s resource starter pack and go through their climate careers dropdown menu section. They provide amazing directories for climate related jobs and also have an amazing Slack channel where they post daily climate jobs.
Wanna volunteer? We got you! First of all, we’re always looking for volunteers at Climate Operation. Interested? Fill out our volunteer form and we’ll schedule a chat 🙂
We also recommend Climate Volunteering which has a wide variety of volunteering opportunities.
What are we reading, watching and listening to
Reading
Nature is made up of many different systems, which interact and depend on each other. The Secret Network of Nature provides an insightful illustration of many of these systems, and what happens when the balance of different systems is disrupted. Since we have started reading this book, we haven’t been able to put it down - it is a must-read for any lover of nature!
Watching
For any environmentalists wanting to watch a fictional action/drama movie, Snow piercer is for you. In this movie, a failed geo-engineering approach has killed all life except for the survivors aboard the Snow piercer, a train continuously moving around the globe. Snow piercer is an attention-grabbing movie that profoundly comments on both the underlying powers of nature (and the consequences of incorrectly fighting climate change on a large scale) as well as the global socioeconomic structure.
Listening
It’s easy to get lost in climate doom-ism and pessimism. How to Save a Planet knows this, and recognises that getting overwhelmed by climate change won’t do any good. This podcast is perfect for those who want to hear about uplifting stories that do talk about the impact of climate change, but also how we can get ourselves out of it.
These are the uplifting activists, organisations and projects that we are currently vibing with 😊
The Activist
Ani Talwar has always been passionate about books and the environment, so it was no surprise that she would combine her love for books and her love for sustainability. In 2017, she wrote and published her novel Atro-City: The Flood, an environmental dystopian novel. Ani has a second novel on the way so make sure to keep an eye out if you’re interested in murder mystery novels with a more subtle environmental focus!
The Organisations
A student-run magazine in the University of York, WILD Magazine publishes articles about sustainability and environmentalism for students on a budget. Anyone can get involved, even beyond the University of York, as it is also meant to unite students across. From gardening vlogs to tips on living a zero-waste lifestyle, WILD Magazine is for anyone looking to read about environmentalism or learn some tips on living even just a little bit more eco-friendly!
Every year, Greening Afrika prioritises a new facet of environmentalism. This year, they’re prioritising climate education. If you’re interested in keeping up with their progress or even just looking to read about strengthening your relationship with nature or how you can contribute to overall wellbeing, we recommend following along with their journey.
The Project
It can be easy to get lost in the sea of sustainable living tips. The Carbon Literacy Project knows this, and their program is meant to combine learning about climate change and reflecting on your own lifestyle to brainstorm individual sustainable action and group-wide environmental efforts. If you’re wanting to check out the impact of carbon emissions or work on your own carbon literacy skills, we definitely recommend you check this project out.
